Harmanpreet Kaur Bio

Harmanpreet Kaur embodies the ‘see ball, hit ball’ mantra of her idol Virender Sehwag. Representing a new generation of Indian women cricketers, she has starred in ad campaigns, endorsements, and central contracts. She also broke new ground as the first Indian cricketer, male or female, to sign with the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League in Australia. This contract followed her impressive 31-ball 46 that led India to their highest-ever T20 chase during their 2016 tour of Australia. In 2017, Kaur became the first Indian to join the Surrey Stars in the ECB’s Kia Super League, continuing her trailblazing career. In April 2013, she was given the captaincy when Mithali Raj was rested for the limited-overs series against Bangladesh, indicating that she is the heir apparent for the position. In November 2016, she took over from Raj as captain of the T20 team for the series against West Indies. Now she is the captain of the Indian Women’s team in all formats.

Harmanpreet Kaur Controversies

After losing the semi-final against England at 2018 T20I Women’s World Cup where Mithali Raj was dropped, the Mithali’s manager lashed out at then captain Harmanpreet Kaur. The veteran batsman’s manager, Annisha Gupta took to Twitter to call Harmanpreet a ‘manipulative, lying, immature and undeserving captain’. She also claimed the Indian women’s team believed in politics and not sports.
Harmanpreet Kaur was charged for breaching the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct during her side’s Women’s Big Bash League match against the Hobart Hurricanes in Hobart. She was reported for breaching CA’s Code of Conduct Article 2.1.2 – abuse of cricket equipment
or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a match – a level 1 offence. The offence occurred during the Thunder’s batting innings, after Harmanpreet was dismissed.
Harmanpreet was fined 75% of her match fee and 3 demerit points to her record by the ICC. On 22 July 2023, in the third ODI against Bangladesh Kaur hit the stumps with the bat after the on-field umpire gave her out. Kaur also misbehaved with Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana after the game. Harman also spoke against the umpiring during the post-match presentation ceremony.
