The Women’s Premier League (WPL) or the Tata WPL is a women’s Twenty20 cricket league in India. It is run by the Board of Control Cricket in India (BCCI). Mumbai Indians were the winners of the first season, which was held in March 2023, and the games were held in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The second season was played between February and March 2024, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru were the champions, the fixtures being in Bengaluru and Delhi.
History of the League
The Women's T20 Challenge was the first major women's T20 tournament in India, launched in 2018 as a one-match event, and the format was expanded to a three-team, three-match tournament in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
In February of the year 2022, then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly revealed the plan to replace the Women’s T20 Challenge with a women’s version of the Indian Premier League (IPL). By August of the same year, details were more specific, and by October of that year, BCCI was considering holding a five-team tournament. At first, this league was called Women’s IPL, but was later officially named Women’s Premier League by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
In January 2023, the BCCI invited bids for title sponsorship, which was won by Tata Group. Mumbai Indians were the first champions as they defeated Delhi Capitals in the final.
